Research Design

The aim of this research study was to examine the issue of balance or bias in the media coverage of the Labor/One Israel and Likud parties in Israel and their leaders during the last four election campaigns—1996, 1999, 2001, and 2003. Analyses were based on news items that appeared on the first and second television channels throughout each election campaign.1 The items chosen were broadcast on the main news programs and the special election magazines of both channels and referred specifically to the election campaign.2

Skilled coders who received the necessary training in content analysis were given clear instructions to carry out analyses of the media coverage in the four election campaigns. During the training we performed reliability tests, following which we settled all the disagreements concerning the way in which news items should be analyzed. Only after we reached an agreement of more than 85 percent between all the coders concerning each and every one of the coding categories did we allow the content analysis to proceed.3
